How Sleep Affects Your Life Expectancy (Too Little AND Too Much)

Most health advice assumes "more is better." Sleep is one of the rare areas where that's not quite true โ€” the research points to a U-shaped curve, where both too little sleep and too much sleep are associated with higher mortality risk. Here's what that actually means.

The U-shaped curve, explained

Multiple large meta-analyses pooling data from dozens of studies and hundreds of thousands of people find the same basic pattern: mortality risk is lowest for people sleeping in the roughly 7-to-8-hour range, and rises on both sides of that window โ€” for people sleeping less than 6 hours, and separately for people sleeping more than 9 hours. It's not a straight line where every extra hour helps; there's a sweet spot.

Why short sleep raises risk

Chronic short sleep has fairly well-understood mechanisms behind its health effects: it's linked to elevated blood pressure, disrupted glucose metabolism (raising diabetes risk), increased inflammation, and impaired immune function. These aren't small or speculative associations โ€” they show up consistently across sleep-restriction studies, not just in observational data.

Why long sleep is trickier to interpret

This is the part that gets oversimplified. Long sleep's association with higher mortality is real in the data, but the causal story is much murkier than for short sleep. A significant portion of the "long sleep" effect appears to be reverse causation โ€” people who are already sick (depression, chronic illness, undiagnosed conditions) often sleep more as a symptom, not a cause, of their health problems. Researchers generally view long sleep as more of a marker of underlying poor health in many cases, rather than sleeping 9+ hours itself directly damaging a healthy person. That nuance rarely survives the trip into headline form.

Quantity isn't the whole story

Duration is the easiest thing to measure, which is why it dominates the research, but sleep quality โ€” how often you wake up, how much deep sleep you get, whether you have something like undiagnosed sleep apnea โ€” matters independently. Someone getting a fragmented 7 hours isn't necessarily doing better than someone getting a solid 6.5.

Somewhere around 7 to 8 hours is the range most consistently associated with the lowest mortality risk. Chronic short sleep has clear, well-understood health costs. Long sleep's link to risk is real in the data but is more often a signal of existing health issues than a cause on its own โ€” which is a very different story than "sleeping too much is bad for you."
